Upcoming ‘Gladiator’ Sequel Resumes Filming

The Film Resumes in Malta

The stage is set for the sequel to legendary filmmaker Ridley Scott’s critically acclaimed masterpiece, Gladiator. After taking a pause in filming due to the actors strike in July, the sequel to the long overdue film, Gladiator 2, will resume shooting next week on December 4th in Malta.

Stuck in development hell for over two decades, Scott’s returning to flesh out the world he established in the original film. The director famously held off on making a sequel to his hit film for so long because he wanted to find the right story to tell. After seemingly finding the proper story in Paul Mescal’s character of Lucius, the son of Lucilla (played by Connie Nielsen in the original film), Scott is ready to return to production.

The Current Rough Cut

In an interview with The New Yorker to promote his newest film, Napoleon, director Ridley Scott revealed that in his free time during the strike, 90 minutes of the film have already been edited. In this cut of footage, Scott disclosed that a scene involved a fight amongst a pack of baboons. This scene was apparently inspired by a video Scott watched involving a group of tourists in South Africa being attacked. “Baboons are carnivores,” Scott told the New Yorker. “Can you hang from that roof for two hours by your left leg? No! A baboon can.”

Who’s Starring in the Sequel?

With Russell Crowe not returning to the film due to his character being killed off in the previous installment, Paul Mescal is taking the lead as Lucius. Aside from Mescal as the lead of the film, Gladiator 2 involves a stacked cast of some of Hollywood’s finest. Two-time Academy Award winner Denzel Washington is portraying a slave who won his freedom. The rest of the newcomers include the Mandalorian himself, Pedro Pascal, Barry Keoghan, Joseph Quinn, Mary Calamawy, and Peter Mensah. Returning from the original film is Connie Nielsen, once again portraying Lucilla, and Djimon Hounsou as Juba. There have been rumors and speculation on whether or not Crowe will return to his Oscar-winning role, but nothing has been made official.

Gladiator 2 is set to premiere in theaters on November 22, 2024. Gladiator is currently streaming on Netflix.
