The Highly-Anticipated Sequel Is One Step Closer to Release

This year saw production grind to a halt for many ongoing Hollywood projects due to both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. With both movements seemingly resolved, Tim Burton has confirmed that his latest film Beetlejuice 2 was able to finish filming.

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice 2 — the sequel to the 1988 supernatural comedy — was announced in February of last year. The film would be produced by Brad Pitt’s company, Plan B Entertainment, and immediately attached huge names to the project. Not only was it revealed that Tim Burton would be returning to direct, but Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara were all confirmed to be reprising their roles alongside franchise newcomers like Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe, and Monica Bellucci.

Filming began on Beetlejuice 2 this past spring, but just as it was nearing the finish line, all shooting came to a standstill. While Beetlejuice 2 had been allowed to continue to film amid the WGA strike, all actors stepped away in solidarity once the SAG-AFTRA strike started in July. Burton stated in a September interview that the production pause had come at an awkward time for his film, as he only had two days of filming remaining for the project. “Literally, it was a day and a half. We know what we have to do. It is 99 percent done.”

With the SAG-AFTRA strike now over, Burton’s estimation about the remaining shooting needed proved to be accurate. The director confirmed in an Instagram post on November 30th that Beetlejuice 2 had wrapped its shooting. The post read, “Just finished shooting Beetlejuice. Thank you to everyone involved.”

When to Expect Beetlejuice 2

Despite the interrupted production, don’t expect a massive delay for this sequel. Beetlejuice 2 is still slated to release next year. Audiences will be able to catch both Michael Keaton and Jenna Ortega in theaters on September 6th, 2024.
