'Kung Fu Panda 4' Trailer Released

It Appears Everyone Is Still Kung Fu Fighting

On Wednesday, December 13, the first trailer for the newest installment in the Kung Fu Panda franchise, Kung Fu Panda 4 (2024), was released to the public. As of now, the trailer has gotten over 3.5 million views and is the number one trending video on YouTube. The film was made by DreamWorks Animation, and it was directed by Mike Mitchell. Stephanie Ma Stine served as co-director.

The Movie’s Premise

According to the Universal Website, this movie follows Po (Jack Black) once again as he must now train a new Dragon Warrior. He meets a thief named Zhen (Awkwafina), and the two go on an adventure together. Eventually, the two come face-to-face with a deadly Chameleon (Viola Davis), who can shapeshift into anyone.

Trailer Breakdown

The trailer begins with Po’s Master, Shifu (Dustin Hoffman), telling him that he now has to take a new path. Said path involves Po  giving up his title as the Dragon Warrior. Back in 2010, DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg talked about the idea of making the Kung Fu Panda series into six movies with the first three being the “student trilogy” and the next three being the “master trilogy.” With the third film ending with Po finding inner peace and this movie being about training a new Dragon Warrior, that idea seems to still be in place. Back to the trailer, it then shows Po meditating, while also intercutting with him fighting a flying creature. Afterward, the trailer shows the Chameleon bring back Tai Long (Ian McShane), only to then possess his kung fu spirit and morph into him. Fans will recognize Tai Long as the villain of the first movie. Apparently, Kung Fu Panda 4 will bring back villains from the earlier films. Following that, Po talks with Zhen in a prison about where to locate the Chameleon, with Zhen offering her assistance.

Po’s dad, Mr. Ping (James Hong), notes that they are going up against an army, which is confirmed with a shot of Po being attacked by that army. Zhen suggests getting their own army, with her and Po traveling to a place full of criminals. After this are more shots of the main characters fighting bad guys and avoiding near-death experiences. There is then the Chameleon transforming into Po and even saying his iconic phrase, “Skadoosh.” The trailer ends with Po and Zhen attempting to sneak past a bunch of unconscious guards before Po awakens them by accidentally letting out a small fart.

Lack of Furious Five?

One thing to notice early on in this film is how there are no shots of the Furious Five. The characters, including Tigress (Angelina Jolie), Crane (David Cross), Monkey (Jackie Chan), Mantis (Seth Rogan), and Viper (Lucy Liu) have been mainstays of this series thus far. Tigress especially has perhaps the closest bond with Po among the group. Director Mike Mitchell has said that all five will return along with their original voice actors, but it is strange for them to have no appearance at all in the trailer. Then again, it is only the first trailer, so who knows.

Kung Fu Panda 4 will be released in theaters on March 8, 2024.
