‘Orphan 3’ in the Works: Hollywood Loves a Good Orphan…Or an Absolutely Evil One

“Expect Twists and Turns”

Orphans as cinematic characters are usually pretty lovable. There’s that Oliver Twist kid who loves asking for more soup, and Annie who likes to belt out show tunes. And now, another orphan is resurfacing: a 30-something-year-old serial killer posing as a child.

That’s right—director William Brent Bell hints that a new Orphan film is in the works.

According to a new interview, Bell says the audience can “expect twists and turns” in his upcoming third installation.

“We’re developing a third one now,” he reveals. “The franchise’s rulebook has been opened up to where anything is possible. And knowing where we are in the process already, I’m extremely excited about the twists and turns that we have in store.”

However, his teasing is akin to an unnecessary advertisement for a rollercoaster. It’s information we already know going into it, as a movie without surprises isn’t really a movie at all.

Forgiving his choice of language, Bell gave us a bit more to sink our teeth into. Discussing how the film series has its own “rulebook” offers fans a juicy glimpse into the project. At this point, it is anyone’s guess as to what kind of rulebook that would be, since we don’t typically get one for adults that pose as orphaned children.

What Happens in the Franchise?

In the film that started it all, Director Jaume Collet-Serra’s Orphan (2009), a couple adopt a seemingly sweet nine year-old girl named Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman), and discover she’s not a child, but rather an adult with some bloodthirsty tendencies.

More than a decade later, Bell signed on as director for Orphan: First Kill (2022). This prequel dives into Esther’s history, with Fuhrman reprising her role when she was 23 years-old. Thanks to the power of production trickery, Fuhrman was able to play a nine year-old girl.

Final Thoughts

Details have not been released about the plot of the third film. Esther was definitely dead at the end of Orphan after suffering a crushing blow to her cervical spine; nevertheless, Bell seems keen to bring back this creepy 30-something-wonky-neck-lady.

While the third installation is in development, check out Bell’s folk horror film Lord of Misrule, currently playing in theaters.
