Christopher Nolan on Zack Snyder’s Influence on Superhero Films

The acclaimed director praises Snyder for his work

Christopher has recently praised Zack Snyder for his work and influence. Previously, the two collaborated on Man of Steel, the film that started DC’s current run of superhero films.

Nolan on Snyder

Throughout Zack Snyder’s long-running career, he has directed several comic-book films, most notably his three films in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), Man of Steel, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League. Before his work in the DCEU, he sank his teeth into other comic-book adaptations, such as 300 and Watchmen.

In an article with The Atlantic, Nolan discussed the impact Snyder’s films had in the industry. “There’s no superhero science-fiction film coming out these days where I don’t see some influence of Zack,” Nolan said during the interview.

“When you watch a Zack Snyder film, you see and feel his love for the potential of cinema. The potential of it to be fantastical, to be heightened in its reality, but to move you and to excite you.”

Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy changed the science fiction super-hero genre with a more grounded realistic approach to origin stories. The Dark Knight was the first comic-book-adapted movie to win an Academy Award with Heath Ledger winning Best Supporting Actor for his incredible portrayal of the Joker.

Snyder’s Rebel Moon

Since Justice League, Snyder has stepped away from the world of comic books and shifted to other worlds. Most recently, he has partnered with Netflix for his two-part science-fiction epic Rebel Moon. Part One – A Child of Fire was released on Netflix on December 21, Part Two – The Scargiver will debut on April 19, 2024.

In an interview with EW, the director stated that he will be releasing an extended cut of A Child of Fire with “close to an extra hour of content” and an R-rating.

“I’m super proud of the PG-13 version of the movie. I really am. I think it’s really fun and it’s clean and cool but again, just the sort of weirdo darkness of the R-rated version was sort of my original thesis for what the movie could be, that’s what we did. That’s what we made in the R-rated version” Snyder said.

Rebel Moon Part 1: A Child of Fire is currently streaming on Netflix.
