‘Scream 7’ Director Exits Film Following Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega’s Departure

Director Christopher Landon Passes the Bloody Torch

More troubling news hits the upcoming Scream sequel as yet another important piece to the production leaves. With a heavy heart, Christopher Landon, who has previously worked on Happy Death Day and Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones announced on Twitter last week that he has ended his position as director of Scream 7. What will this mean for Wes Craven’s series?

Continuing a Horror Classic

After the success of the original films, as well as a non-canonical series on MTV, the Scream franchise focused the story on a new set of characters with another Scream released on January 14th 2022, directed by Matt Bettinelli-Oplin and Tyler Gillet. Despite mixed opinions on the iconic franchise getting what appeared to be a reboot/sequel series (especially after the death of the creator, Wes Craven), the fifth and sixth installments released in 2022 and 2023 were big hits for horror fans. However, there were questions on where the next film would take the franchise. Should there be doubt on how long a franchise from the ‘90s could be dragged out?

Scream fans are holding tight to their seats this New Year as they await for what will happen next for their beloved horror film series. Actors Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, who play the protagonists, Sam and Tara Carpenter, have left the project this year. Barrera was abruptly axed from the film, and Ortega was reported to have left due to a salary dispute. Their departures set back production, and now with Christopher Landon’s “goodbye” tweet, there is worry about what will happen to the series. Though he stated on his Twitter that he hopes for the best for Wes Craven’s franchise, he also said “it was a dream job that turned into a nightmare.” The film is still in production, though there is little information on what the story will be about.

That being said, Matt Bettinelli-Oplin and Tyler Gillet are currently keeping their positions as executive producers for the project, so there is still hope for horror fans. Scream 6 can now be streamed on Amazon Prime and Youtube.
