Mickey Mouse Is Getting the Winnie The Pooh Treatment With Two Upcoming Horror Films

A scene from Mickeys Mouse Trap

Come Inside, It's Fun Inside

Mickey Mouse is now among the favorite childhood characters to become the face of a horror movie. The famous Disney character will be getting two horror movies and one is even based off of the short that introduced the mouse to the world, “Steamboat Willie.”

Don’t Take Your Kids to See This Movie

Pooh isn’t the only happy furry creature that got a horror makeover. There are multiple things in the works for the frontman of Disney World. This mouse is getting a horror film titled, Mickey’s Mouse Trap. He is also getting a video game titled Infestation 88. If that wasn’t enough, he is also getting a second horror movie based on the short Steamboat Willie, which was his introduction to the world by Walt Disney in 1928. Now, almost a century later, Mickey’s face will no longer be known as the guy with a clubhouse. He will be the new Scream face for the younger generations.

The Trap

On the first day of 2024, Mickey Mouse entered the public domain. Since the teaser trailer just dropped, it’s clear that the movie was filmed before its drop on the public domain, but the team was unable to release any information about it until now. Mickey’s Mouse Trap is expected to come as soon as March 2024.

Amusement and Fear

The plotline for the low-budget horror film involves an amusement arcade and a masked killer. The logline reads, “It’s Alex’s 21st birthday, but she’s stuck at the amusement arcade on a late shift so her friends decide to surprise her, but a masked killer dressed as Mickey Mouse decides to play a game of his own with them which she must survive.”

Most of the cast is not well-known. Starring in Mickey’s Mouse Trap are Sophie McIntosh, Callum Sywyk, Allegra Nocita, Ben Harris, Damir Kovic, Mackenzie Mills, Nick Biskupek and Simon Phillips. Jamie Bailey is directing this slasher.

Steven LaMorte, who’s set to direct the Steamboat Willie horror movie, believes the joyous short has “potential for pure, unhinged terror.” The upcoming horror-comedy is untitled, but it is known that it will be based on the original short from 1928.

The upcoming video game will also showcase a monstrous version of the loveable cartoon.

The Mouse Is Out

Mickey is in the same situation as Winnie the Pooh now who had the horror movie, Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey and has a second film in the works. The cartoon character that Disney made is not in the public domain, but filmmakers are allowed to work with modernized versions to avoid copyright. Bailey said that the goal for the film is to play into the ridiculousness of everyone’s favorite mouse murdering people. LaMorte stated, “This is our version of a public domain character. It’s a scary thrill ride with heart and humor, based on this character that everybody knows.”
