Gerald Butler Reprises Role In “How To Train Your Dragon” Adaptation

In the upcoming live-action remake of “How To Train Your Dragon,” Gerard Butler will reprise his role as Stoick.

Gerard Butler Returns for the Live-Action Remake of “How To Train Your Dragon”

Dreamworks has announced their plans for a live-action remake of their classic How To Train Your Dragon. Among the film’s cast is the original actor of Hiccup’s father, Stoick, Gerard Butler.

The Return of Stoick

According to a report from Entertainment Weekly, Universal and Dreamworks are collaborating to create a live-action remake of How To Train Your Dragon. Among the cast, Scottish actor Gerard Butler will reprise his role as Stoick, Hiccup’s father. Stoick is the fierce yet well-meaning father who learns to overcome his disdain for dragons throughout the film. Other confirmed members of the cast include Mason Thames as Hiccup and Nico Parker as Astrid. More cast members and details will be revealed as the film approaches. The film is set to be released on June 13, 2025.

What do we Know About the Live-Action “How To Train Your Dragon”

Given how far away the live-action How to Train Your Dragon is, there are relatively few details regarding the film. Also returning to the production is the original writer and director, Dean DeBlois.

On a hopeful note, Dreamworks has also promised that the remake will “draw audiences deep into DreamWorks Animation’s imaginative lore.” The announcement of this film comes after a decade of live-action Disney remakes that dominated at the box office, regardless of their critical reception. Therefore, Dreamworks likely took notes from Disney’s success, which is ironic given how much they’ve made fun of the company in the past.

Does this Remake have Hope?

Gerard Butler has proven himself numerous times as a live-action warrior. This was best demonstrated in 300 with his role as King Leonidas and another Germanic warrior, Beowulf, in the 2005 film Beowulf and Grendel. While Butler himself has proven himself in live-action, the same cannot be said for adaptations of animation as a whole. Despite their earning, live-action remakes of Disney films are infamous for either adding nothing or ruining the original story. You can find similar criticism against adaptations of anime, video games, and other properties into live-action. Of course, we will have to wait and see if Dreamworks can bring charm back to the big screen.

How To Train Your Dragon is set to be released on June 13, 2025.
