‘Mean Girls’ Tops The Weekend Box Office, Beating Out The Original’s Opening Numbers

Get In Loser

The 2024 Mean Girls from Tina Fey is doing extremely well at the box office. Fans are enjoying the reimagined musical so much that it has beat out the original film’s opening numbers at $28 million on its opening weekend as compared to the 2004 Mean Girls which opened with $24 million.

Box Office Earnings

According to TheNumbers.com the opening weekend of the original 2004 Mean Girls earned 24.2 million at the box office. Similar to the 2024 film, it took the top spot. Although 24 might not seem like a lot as compared to other top-of-the-box-office films, changing the dollars to present times with inflation, the box office earnings are more like 40 million dollars. Moreover, the original went on to gross over $86 million and over $130 million worldwide. On top of the fact that the hype surrounding the film has only grown in popularity over time, it has made Lindsay Lohan an all-time star.

The Original Plastics

Twenty years ago, the original Mean Girls premiered starring Lindsay Lohan (Freaky Friday) as Cady Heron and Rachel McAdams (The Notebook) as the girl everyone loves to hate, Regina George. Karen Smith was played by Amanda Seyfried (Mamma Mia) and Gretchen Weiners was played by Lacey Chabert (Party of Five). Finally, Aaron Samuels was played by Jonathan Bennett (The Holiday Sitter) and Ms. Norbury was played by Tina Fey (Only Murders in the Building). This was probably one of the most memorable and iconic teen movies of the early 2000s. The film is quite timeless as it has become popular with the younger generations.

Twenty Years Later

The 2024 Mean Girls stars Reneé Rapp (The Sex Lives of College Girls) as Regina George and Angourie Rice (Honor Society) as Cady. Gretchen Weiners is played by Bebe Wood (Love, Victor), and Karen Smith is played by Avantika Vandanpu (Spin). Tina Fey is reprising her role as Ms. Norbury and Aaron Samuels is played by Christopher Briney (The Summer I Turned Pretty)

The 2024 film is based on the 2018 Tony-nominated Broadway show. For its first weekend, it made over 28 million according to Entertainment Weekly. Entertainment Weekly predicts that for Martin Luther King Day, the film will gross 32 million for the United States. Outside of the US, the film earned 6.5 million and has a worldwide earning, not including MLK day, of 34.5 million. The budget of the film is 36 million so to already make a profit from the first weekend is a very good thing.

The New Musical

Fans have been split in deciding if they like the 2024 Mean Girls. Some didn’t like the musical aspects of the movie and others thought it was the greatest thing on Earth. Many have gone to TikTok to share their opinions upon leaving the theater. It’s expected that fans of Renee Rapp and Christopher Briney will see the film in support of their beloved singer and actor.

The box office earnings are only expected to go up as it enters its second week in theaters. Mean Girls has unsurprisingly topped the list and has made more money than the original.

Mean Girls is currently in theaters.
