The Franchise’s First Woman-led Film Will Bring Changes to the Galaxy Far Far Away

Daisy Ridley has recently spoken with AlloCine in an interview about her next upcoming Star Wars venture. The new film focusing on Ridley’s character, Rey Skywalker, will lead the ever-growing saga into “new directions”.

Last year, it was announced at the Star Wars Celebration that the new film Star Wars: New Jedi Order will be the first film in the franchise to be directed by a woman, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

The New Jedi Order

Originally making her debut in 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Daisy Ridley led the sequel trilogy as the main protagonist for a new generation of fans. In a series of events that brought heavy criticism to the franchise, the character of Rey Skywalker has jumped many hurdles to prove herself as a true Jedi despite her true identity as the granddaughter of the evil Emperor Palpatine.

“Once I knew what the story was and everything, I knew that it was something I wanted to do,” Ridley said in the interview. “I think it’s a really fantastic exploration of the Star Wars world. It’s a really cool way of taking the story on in a bit of a different direction.”

Her journey from being a lowly scavenger on the desert world Jakku to becoming the galaxy’s only hope since the age of Luke Skywalker has, despite some critics, been praised by fans as a story worth following.

Previously expressing her love for the series (Rolling Stones), Ridley has shown nothing but passion for the character on screen. Her presence in the series has caused many female fans who have once felt left out of the Star Wars family to feel welcomed. Then, her acceptance into the universe by the nerdy glitter queen who is Carrie Fisher cemented Ridley into forever being an important part of Star Wars.

The Future of Star Wars

Daisy Ridley has teased her fans that her next Star Wars venture will be a different story than what audiences might expect. The story will follow Rey Skywalker fifteen years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Though not much information has been released, she has claimed that the film made her more excited than ever to be part of the universe.

The new film was announced at the 2023 Star Wars celebration with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy attached to direct. Her previous works include A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness and Saving Face. Chinoy is an award-winning journalist, filmmaker, and political activist.

Star Wars: New Jedi Order is slated for a 2026 release and though it will be years until the next film is released, fans can experience the galaxy at home by streaming the franchise so far on Disney+.
