Eiichiro Oda Can’t Slow Down

It seems like Eiichiro Oda, creator of One Piece, just doesn’t know when to quit. From creating more than 1000 episodes in the anime to one of the only well-received live-action adaptations on Netflix, the word “rest” just isn’t in Oda’s vocabulary. While this may seem like an exaggeration, Oda has literally worked towards being a mangaka since childhood. Even amongst his peers, Oda is known for being hardworking and never taking a break. Literally, the man is known for sleeping only 2-4 hrs a day and forgetting to eat in order to spend more time on his manga. All this despite having a team of artists to help at his disposal. Most recently, a trailer for his newest anime on Netflix has just dropped.

A Blast From The Past

Before diving into the trailer, the first to know is that Oda’s newest work takes place before the events of One Piece and was released as a one-shot before One Piece was serialized. There’s no shame in being confused by that last line because it is confusing. For clarification, Oda created Monsters prior to One Piece. Still, the main character and events that transpire are considered canon within the main series as in the Thriller Bark arc of One Piece the main character of Monsters, Ryuma, is featured there. For those needing more proof, Ryuma and Zoro are even distant relatives. Phew, what a doozy!

Dragon Tales

Moving on to the trailer, things start light-hearted enough. A samurai grateful for his meal in a small cozy town promises to repay this kindness. The art style and character design feel familiar yet different all at once. Some of the design choices will instantly remind fans of certain characters from the One Piece series. This obviously further proves the previously mentioned connection between the two anime. Aside from the main character, Ryuma, looking like Zoro, there is also a character by the name of Shirano, who bears a passing resemblance to Mihawk. An obnoxious pimp hat with an eye-catching feather? Too much of a coincidence!

Monsters: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation is set to launch on Netflix on January 22.

A lover of gore and over the top violence, no movie can make my stomach squirm. The only thing better than a bloody death scene is a well choreographed stunt. Whether it be action or horror, if it has blood in it, then I've likely already seen it.
