Lily Gladstone Makes History As First Oscar Nominated Native Actress Of American Descent

Lily Gladstone Makes History!

On January 23rd, the nominees for the 96th Academy Awards were announced by presenters Jack Quaid and Zazie Beetz. Among the brilliant performances and creatives who were nominated for the prestigious award, Lily Gladstone is a name that stood out to many due to the significance of her nomination. She is the first woman of Native American descent to be nominated for the Lead Actress category for her performance in Killers of the Flower Moon.

Her Performance In “Killers of the Flower Moon”

Directed by Martin Scorsese, Killers of the Flower Moon stars Lily Gladstone as Mollie Burkhardt, an Osage woman married to Ernest (Leonardo DiCaprio). The Osage nation family was influential in the oil industry, but when her friends and family are killed suspiciously, a murder investigation is led by the newly-formed FBI.

Gladstone’s portrayal of Mollie alongside DiCaprio was highly praised by many critics, and it even led to her earning multiple award nominations. She also recently won the Golden Globe for Best Actress, making Golden Globe history for becoming the first indigenous woman to win in that category.

What Does This Mean For Lily Gladstone and Indigenous People?

It’s safe to say that Gladstone’s accomplishments achieved through her work in the film have cemented her status as a trailblazer in Hollywood. Before Killers of the Flower Moon, she was more known for her performances in indie films such as Certain Women, and she also had appearances in television shows like Billions and Reservation Dogs.

Looking more at the bigger picture, her nomination (and even her potential win) has shed light on Indigenous people in the industry. The minority group, let alone Indigenous women, have had little to no representation in the Lead Actress category of the Academy Awards. There have only been a handful of times of recognition in the awards ceremony: Yalitza Aparicio in 2018 (Roma), who is Mexican of indigenous descent, Keisha Castle-Hughes in 2003 (Whale Rider), who is from New Zealand and of Māori descent, and Merle Osborn in 1935 (The Dark Angel), who is Sri Lankan and partially of Māori descent.

The 96th Academy Awards will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel on March 10, 2024, and aired by ABC. Killers of the Flower Moon is available to stream with an Apple TV subscription and also available to buy or rent on Amazon Prime.
