Denis Villeneuve Says ‘Dune: Part Three’ Will Be His Last Dune Movie

A Dune Trilogy

On Wednesday, January 31, in an interview with Time Magazine, Director Denis Villeneuve said that should a third Dune film be made, it would be the last film he directs in the franchise. Villeneuve is directing Dune: Part Two (2024) which is expected to release March 1, 2024, after previously being delayed by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA Strike.

Villeneuve Moving Forward

In an interview with Empire Magazine in 2023, Villeneuve talks about wanting to have a Dune trilogy. “That would be the dream”, in his own words. So it is likely Villeneuve wants to wrap up everything in a third Dune film before moving on, following the trend of filmmakers ending their franchises with the third film. Similar to Christopher Nolan with The Dark Knight Trilogy, James Gunn with Guardians of the Galaxy, and Kevin Smith with the Clerks films.

Despite a script being written, according to the South Korean Press, a third Dune film still hasn’t been officially confirmed by Warner Bros. It is also unclear if they will decide to continue the series after Villeneuve departs. There are at least six books in the original series by Frank Herbert and 22 more after that by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, respectively, though many of their books are prequels. For now, Dune fans have the second film to look forward to.

The History of Dune

The Dune series originally started as a series of novels written by Frank Herbert, before the reigns were passed down to his sons, Brian, and Kevin J. Anderson. It was first adapted into a movie in 1984, directed by David Lynch and starring Kyle MacLachlan where, despite receiving negative reviews and only earning $30.9 million against a $40 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo, it has since gained a bit of a cult following.

After, there were two miniseries’, one developed in 2000 and another in 2003, made by John Harrison and aired on the Sci-Fi Channel. Finally, in 2021, Denis Villeneuve came in with his first Dune (2021) movie, which earned $402 million against a $165 million budget.

Dune: Part Two comes out in Theaters on March 1.
