The Coen Brothers Are Diving into Horror for Their Next Project

A ‘Very Bloody’ and ‘Horribly Funny’ Film

The Coen Brothers are working together on their next project after working apart for a number of years. They are returning to make a horror film.

A Coen Brothers Horror Film

Ethan Coen sat with his wife, Tricia Cooke, at a film festival in Tromsø, Norway, where he revealed he and his brother had written a script for a new movie. Via Montages’s website: “It’s a pure horror film, and it gets very bloody. If you like Blood Simple, I think you’ll enjoy it.” No other details have been revealed, but the film is set to begin production in spring as “the preparations are done, but Joel may have to finish another project first.”

The director and his wife also spoke about their upcoming film Drive-Away Dolls,  starring Magaret Qualley opposite Australian actress Geraldine Viswanathan and also includes Pedro Pascal and Matt Damon in the mix.

“In search of a fresh start, two women embark on an impromptu road trip to Tallahassee. However, things quickly go awry when they cross paths with a group of inept criminals along the way.”

The comedy film comes to theatres next month as part of a trilogy.

Driveaway Dolls

The No Country for Old Men director has already begun working on the sequel, and earlier this week, Deadline revealed the title as Honey Don’t!, which will add Aubrey Plaza (My Old Ass) and Chris Evans (Pain Hustlers) to the cast with Qualley.

“We’ve only written the first two, so the stories don’t connect…” Cooke stated in the interview, “The connection is that all three are stories with lesbian protagonists and can be classified as trashy B-movies.” Coen added.

“We originally wrote Drive-Away Dolls for a friend of ours more than twenty years ago, but no one was interested in financing it – the timing was bad. There were probably even clearer expectations that queer films had to be about something important and address inner pain at the time.”

Drive-Away Dolls come to theatres on February 23, 2024, from Ethan Coen, Tricia Cooke, and Focus Features.
