‘Argylle’ Fell Short Opening Weekend Despite Being Box Office #1

After only bringing in $18 million with a $200 million budget, “Argylle” had a disappointing opening weekend.

The New Spy Thriller Kills At The Box Office But Gets Killed By Critics

The new spy thriller Argylle has been generating a lot of buzz for many months now for a multitude of reasons. For one, the movie is directed by Matthew Vaughn, who is most popular for his work directing The Kingsmen trilogy. Its cast is filled with A-list actors and celebrities, such as Bryce Dallas Howard, Henry Cavill, and Dua Lipa. There was even a fan theory going around the internet that the author of the book that the movie is based on, Elly Conway, was, in fact, pop sensation Taylor Swift using an alias. Despite the big buzz (and the big budget), Argylle failed to turn a profit during its first weekend at the box office.

What We Know About The Movie

Argylle is centered around a reclusive author (played by Bryce Dallas Howard) who writes best-selling action books about a secret agent named Argylle, and her life is ultimately turned upside down when she finds out that the plot of her books has been turned into reality. Joining Howard, Henry Cavill plays the real-life Argylle, and he’s supported by Sam Rockwell, John Cena, and pop singer Dua Lipa. Bryan Cranston, Samuel L. Jackson, and Catherine O’Hara are also featured in the movie.

The film is based on the book of the same name written by Elly Conway. However, since the author is actually unknown, it received a lot of attention on social media with the fan theory that Taylor Swift was the real author of the book since the cat in the movie was the same breed as the singer’s cat. It was later revealed that the rumor was false.

The Critic’s Response

However, even with these big names, the movie made $18 million opening weekend, which barely made a dent in its $200 million budget. The movie’s global release helped raise the total revenue up to $35.3 million, with it grossing $17.3 million in other territories. Despite these low numbers, the movie topped the domestic box office, though it didn’t have much competition with movies like The Beekeeper, Wonka, and Migration

The movie overall only scored 35% on Rotten Tomatoes, with an average rating of 5 out of 10 among the website’s critics. While the cast received praise for their comedic performances, the plot of the film was reviewed more negatively by the critics.

Argylle is now available to watch in theaters.
