Will the Avenger Return?

Jeremy Renner is ready to return as Hawkeye, if Marvel has plans for him to reprise the role.

A year after Renner’s near-fatal snowplow accident, the Hawkeye star has returned to work with the production of Mayor of Kingstown season three. With Renner’s recovery at the stage where he is able to return to films and television, he’s begun doing press interviews and the number one question is whether or not he’s returning to Marvel.

Renner’s Recovery

On January 1, 2023, Renner broke more than 30 bones after being involved in an accident with a snowplow. Using the snowplow to help pull his nephew’s truck out of the snow, the vehicle began to slide sideways toward his nephew. In an attempt to stop the snowplow, Renner exited it but was pulled underneath and run over. Renner suffered blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries.

Despite the severe injuries, Renner made a speedy recovery, walking with the assistance of a cane about ten weeks after the accident. In November of 2023, Renner shared a video on social media of himself skipping side-to-side down a long, angled driveway and running back up it. The social media post was a demonstration of his phenomenal recovery.

Hawkeye’s Potential Return

Ahead of his upcoming appearance in the Silk almond milk Super Bowl commercial, Renner was asked about reprising the beloved Avenger.

“I’m always game,” Renner said when speaking about returning to Marvel. “I’m gonna be strong enough, that’s for sure. I’ll be ready. All those guys come to my bedside, and they’ve been with me all along through this recovery, so … if they want me, they could have me. It would be something.”

In the interview, Renner doesn’t mention whether he’s seeking to return to the big or small screen. The last time fans saw Renner as Clint Barton was in the 2021 series Hawkeye on Disney+. There has not been any movement on a second season, leaving it likely Hawkeye will stay as a one-shot miniseries, similar to other Marvel series like Wandavison or The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Rather than a second season of Hawkeye, it seems more likely Barton would make an appearance in a film, such as Avengers: Secret Wars.

Hawkeye is currently streaming on Disney+.
