Cody’s Corpse Comedy Won’t Too Unfamiliar

Fans of Jennifer’s Body should get excited for Lisa Frankenstein, because Diablo Cody announced that they, in fact, share a universe.

A Universe Not So Alternate

The director has shown that she is thrilled to return to the genre– though it has not been a simple decision for her. Jennifer’s Body’s initial release in 2009 exhibited a poor audience yield with negative critic reviews. Over the recent years, the film has returned with more appreciation for her work, catalyzing a pivotal turn in the film’s reputation.

Cody told Deadline, “I was nervous to get back into that, and then this magical thing happened the last few years where that movie found an audience and people began to really appreciate it. And it gave me the confidence to say, ‘You know what? I never lost my passion for that world and I want to do another one.’ So, I’m here.”

‘Jennifer’s Body’: A Horror-Comedy Favorite

The 2009 American horror comedy film that fans know as Jennifer’s Body was written by Diablo Cody and distributed by 20th Century Fox. The film stars Megan Fox, Amanda Seyfried, Johnny Simmons, J.K. Simmons, Amy Sedaris, and Adam Brody. The film centers around a high school student, Jennifer (played by Megan Fox) who, after becoming possessed, begins to kill and eat male flesh. In recent years, part of the reason why the film resurfaced with positive criticism was its new notion of being a feminist cult classic, an idea essential to the #MeToo Movement and its empowerment of women.

‘Lisa Frankenstein’: An Overview

To be released on February 9th, the upcoming American horror comedy film Lisa Frankenstein is written by Diablo Cody and directed by Zelda Williams. The film is inspired by the famous novel Frankenstein, published in 1818 and written by Mary Shelley. Cody wrote the story about a misunderstood teenage girl, Lisa (played by Kathryn Newton), and her journey in reanimating a Frankenstein-like boy (played by Cole Sprouse).

The film additionally stars Liza Soberano, Henry Eikenberry, Joe Chrest, and Carla Gugino. Lisa Frankenstein marks Liza Soberano’s Hollywood debut, in light of her largely Philippines-based acting career. The film is being distributed by Focus Features within the United States, and Universal Pictures internationally. Knowing Cody, fans should expect a similar horror comedy to Jennifer’s Body with the potential to become one of the fans’ new favorite feminist cult classics.

Lisa Frankenstein will be available in theaters starting February 9, 2024.
