This Elevated Horror Film is Set to Rock On

Stranger Things star Joseph Quinn has announced his next role. He will star in the directorial debut of American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis’ Relapse

The Return Of The American Psycho

According to Variety, the author of American Psycho, Bret Easton Ellis, plans on moving to the silver screen. His directorial debut will be the horror film Relapse. Starring in the film will be the breakout name of Stranger Things actor Joseph Quinn, who rose to fame as metalhead Eddie Munson. While this is Ellis’ first film to direct, he was a writer and producer for other films such as The Informers and Smiley Face Killers. Producers for Relapse include SND, Adrian Guerra’s Nostromo, and Simon Wallon’s Kiss & Kill, all veteran companies within horror cinema. Nicholas Rolland, a producer, said the film would have a “tangible and cinematographic presence,” like The Thing, Pan’s Labyrinth, The Host, or Alien.

What Is ‘Relapse’ About?

Relapse will tell the story of Matt Cullen (Quinn), a troubled man who goes into rehab after a lethal encounter at a depraved party.

As he tries to get his life back on track, he is haunted by his relapsing addiction and a mysterious monster from his past stalking him. Additionally, the film has been dubbed an “elevated horror” film, referring to horror using strong elements of symbolism and social commentary. Given the premise, there’s little doubt this film will be an allegory for substance abuse. As demonstrated by films such as Us and Get Out, this is a genre with strong storytelling potential.

The Eye-Opening Potential

Even if Ellis has yet to direct, he has repeatedly proven himself a talented author. He was the original author of the critically acclaimed American Psycho, whose main character, Patrick Bateman, is remembered as one of the most iconic villains in modern cinema. For the past week or so, Joseph Quinn has been on quite a successful streak within his career. Mere days earlier, Quinn was announced to star in the A Quiet Place prequel, Day One. Days later, he announced his role as Johnny Storm in the long-anticipated reboot of The Fantastic Four. Ever since his breakout role as Eddie Munson in Stranger Things, he has become one of the biggest stars of the show.
