New Dracula Origin Film in the Works From “Fifth Element” Director Luc Besson

Hollywood is churning out yet another "Dracula" retelling. Christopher Lee as Dracula in Dracula (1958).

The Infamous Vampire Returns…Again

Dracula is getting another adaptation after being recreated multiple times from the famous novel by Bram Stroker. The director and studio have since been announced.

Reimagined Fictional Characters

Certain fictional characters constantly find themselves being reimagined in Hollywood over and over again. From popular action heroes such as James Bond and Jack Ryan to comic book heroes like Batman and Spider-Man, Hollywood loves to churn out new iterations of these fan favorites continuously. However, the character who seems to have the most adaptations is Dracula.

Last year alone saw the release of two major theatrical Dracula-centered films, Renfield and The Last Voyage of the Demeter, both becoming box office flops for Universal. Whether audiences are welcoming or not, another major Dracula film is in the works with director Luc Besson helming the project.

Recent Dracula Adaptations

Bram Stoker’s original 1897 Dracula novel being in the public domain has led to the character appearing across all media. Beloved adaptations include the 1931 Dracula and 1992’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula, directed by Francis Ford Coppola. While these films were box office successes, recent Dracula films have not found favor among audiences.

Despite turning a profit for the studio, 2022’s The Invitation was rejected by both critics and audiences. Last year, Universal released two different Dracula-centered movies, Renfield and The Last Voyage of the Demeter, both being box-office flops. A more favored rendition of the famous vampire has been a three-episode series produced by BBC, despite not being renewed for a second season.

Yet Another Dracula Film

There have been numerous films before that have explored Dracula’s origin story, most famously in 2014’s underperforming Dracula Untold. However, Luc Besson’s currently untitled Dracula film will once again explore the origin of the notorious vampire. Starring in the new film is Caleb Landry Jones, who is famous for portraying Banshee in 2011’s X-Men: First Class as the legendary mythical vampire himself. Christoph Waltz has also been revealed to star in the movie in an undisclosed role.

While still in early development, the film has been described by “The Hollywood Reporter” as being a “retelling of Bram Stoker’s classic Gothic tale with Landry Jones set to play the Transylvania Count-turned-vampire.” Later on in their reporting, they also noted, “Besson’s take will focus on the beginning of Dracula’s life and his relationship with his wife.” How this new take on the character will differentiate itself from other versions is yet to be seen. However, the article also notes that the film will have a big budget. Hopefully, the film will find new avenues to explore and distance itself from the countless other adaptations.

Stay tuned for further updates on Luc Besson’s Dracula film.
