Marvel Studios Is Reportedly Renaming ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’

It Appears This Dynasty Will No Longer Feature Kang

On Wednesday, February 21, The Hollywood Reporter published an article where they reported that Marvel Studios will be renaming the next Avengers film, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty (2026). They say this was done to remove Kang from the title after his actor, Jonathan Majors, was fired from the studio because he was convicted of third-degree assault and harassment.

Marvel’s Original Plan With Kang

Back in 2020, Marvel announced during their investors’ meeting that Jonathan Majors would be playing Kang The Conqueror in the then-upcoming third Ant-Man movie. After a variant of Kang named He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors) popped up at the end of the first season of Loki (2021-2023), fans speculated on what this could mean. Then in 2022 during San Diego Comic Con, Kevin Feige, President of Marvel, announced two new Avenger films, The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars (2027). No name is currently known to replace Avengers: Kang Dynasty.

It was clear that Kang was meant to be the next big bad of the MCU following Thanos (Josh Brolin). However, this next chapter in the MCU did not turn out the way Marvel expected. Not only was Majors going through some controversy, but his first official appearance as Kang was not received well. Furthermore, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantimania (2023) ended up underperforming at the box office. The Hollywood Reporter even said that Marvel was supposedly already looking to lose Kang before Majors was convicted due to the box office performance of Quantinmania.

What Could The Next FIlm Be About Instead?

Though Kang is seemingly out of the picture, Marvel doesn’t appear to be recasting the character. Moreover, many fans have wondered what the next Avengers movie will be about instead. Some have speculated that it could be the character Doctor Doom. It would make sense. Despite being associated as a major villain of the Fantastic Four, he has fought The Avengers from time to time. Plus his character has been involved in the most recent Secret Wars comic so he could help set that up. Given that Marvel is working on a new Fantastic Four movie (2025), Doom could first appear there to set up his appearance in the next Avengers film. Anything is possible. Until then, fans will have to just wait patiently.

Avengers 5 will hit theaters on May 1, 2026.
