First Look of Live-Action ‘Borderlands’ Movie Revealed

The Long Tradition of Turning Popular Video Games into Films Continues

People have published two exclusive first-look photos from the upcoming Lionsgate film Borderlands, based on the popular video game series.

Freezing a Moment in Time

One photo features a close-up shot of Lilith (Cate Blanchett). The other photo showcases characters peering downwards, including Claptrap (Jack Black), Roland (Kevin Hart), Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt), Krieg (Florian Munteanu), Dr. Patricia Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis), and the aforementioned hero, Lilith.

History of ‘Borderlands’

Turning popular video games into films, like the recent smash hit Five Nights at Freddy’s (2023), has become a frequent tradition slash huge money-making scheme, and Borderlands is no exception. This film has been developing since 2015, making it a long-awaited venture for excited fans.

For those unfamiliar, Borderlands started as a role-playing, open-world game upon its release by Gearbox Software in 2009. It’s centered on the planet “Pandora” with four “Vault Hunters” — who, as expected, are searching for a vault. Akin to what one would find in a rich person’s home, the repository promises abundance in wealth. However, it also houses otherworldly treasures related to aliens, arguably not what one would expect to find in a run-of-the-mill vault.

Similar to the Original Video Game

In an interview with IGN from November 2023, director Eli Roth stated that his film would keep some of the original game’s likeness but include unique variations as well.

Roth said, “There are certain things that we kept very, very close.”

In addition, he commented, “But I really worked with (Gearbox Software CEO) Randy Pitchford, and he goes: ‘Think of it like Marvel, where the comics are their own canon and the movies are their own canon, and you don’t have to be married to it. The games are going to be the games, and the movie’s the movie, and if they continue it, great.”

Furthermore, based on the photos, fans will be thrilled to note that some central characters’ appearances do match those displayed in the video game, including Lilith’s wildly jagged hair, Kreig’s bizarre Psycho mask, and Tiny Tina’s iconic bunny ears.

Final Thoughts

Apart from the recently released vibrant photos, details about the film remain shrouded in mystery. Fans will have to wait for more teaser images from the cast and crew until Borderlands’ premiere on August 9th.
