Yorgos Lanthimos To Remake ‘Save the Green Planet!’ Alongside Ari Aster

Yorgos Lanthimos recently helmed the Golden Globe Winner “Poor Things,” and his next big project will be a remake of the iconic “Save the Green Planet.”

From ‘Dogtooth,’ ‘The Lobster,’ to ‘Poor Things’

Yorgos Lanthimos, who recently directed the Golden Globe Best Picture winner Poor Things, is set to direct a remake of the classic Korean film Save the Green Planet! (2003). Variety reports that producers Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe at Element Pictures, along with Ari Aster—best known for his horror masterpieces Hereditary (2018) and Midsommar (2019)—and his company Square Peg, are involved in the project. Additionally, CJ ENM (formerly known as CJ Entertainment) is part of the production. According to Variety, Emma Stone, who’s in the Oscar race for Poor Things, will reunite with Lanthimos.

Preventing a Full-Blown Alien Invasion

Penned by original director Joon-hwan Jang, the project features a protagonist who’s convinced that Earth will be invaded by aliens, so he becomes the hero who prevents this fate. Alongside his girlfriend, he executes brutal torturing of big-wig execs and high-powered leaders he thinks are, in fact, aliens. Back in the early 2000s, what separated this wild film from the rest was its refusal to be defined by any singular genre — from sci-fi to extreme violence and absurdist comedy.

Moreover, the remake will pay homage to the genre-bending style, albeit with the infusion of Lanthimos’ and Aster’s imaginations.

Furthermore, according to a 2020 interview with Aster and his Square Peg co-partner Lars Knudsen, the film encompasses the following: “Swinging with youthful abandon between white-knuckle suspense, absurd slapstick, grim horror, and a deeply felt (and earned) sense of tragedy, Save The Green Planet! is one of the most remarkable films to come out of South Korea – among this recent wave or any wave, for that matter.”

Who May Join in the Fun?

Another notable allegedly joining the Save The Green Planet! remake ranks include Will Tracy of Succession fame, who is penning the screenplay. One rumor making the rounds is the possible location of the shoot, which is set in both New York and the UK. Based on Lanthimos’ long history of helming great films like The Lobster (2015) and Dogtooth (2009), it will be exciting to see him incorporate his vision into this South Korean film, scheduled for a 2025 theatrical release.
