Potterheads Will Have A More “Faithful” Return to The Wizarding World

The Harry Potter craze rises again as Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav releases information on a TV series based on JK Rowling’s hit children’s book series. The news initially hit fans about an upcoming retelling of the series on the small screen from the 2023 Max streaming event. Since then, Zaslov has announced that the Wizarding World will reach the streaming service in 2026.

Mischief Managed

Between 1997 and 2007, a seven-book children’s series about a young wizard destined to save the world caused the world to erupt in magical chaos. JK Rowling’s massive success with the Harry Potter series would lead to eleven movies, plays, merchandise, theme parks, and more for a fandom so big it challenged Game of Thrones and Star Wars. With the recent accomplishments of Hogwarts Legacy, a 2023 open-world video game made with Unreal Engine, fans have been riled up for more Wizarding World content (IGN). From the minds of Warner Bros., the answer to this resurgence of Harry Potter mania is to remake the series on the small screen.

What We Know

As it stands now, there is not an extensive list of facts known about the upcoming 2026 series for HBO Max. Casey Boys, the chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, has claimed it will be a “faithful” adaptation of the books, unlike the films, which had ventured creatively as they were released. He has also released information that the series will focus on one book for each season of the streamable series (as stated in a recent Deadline article).

As for the creative side of the project, an unfinished list of writers, producers, and directors is claimed to be present. These individuals include Martha Hillier (The Last Kingdom writer and producer), Kathleen Jordan (Teenage Bounty Hunters creator), Tom Moran (The Devil’s Hour creator), Michael Lesslie (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes writer), and Francesca Gardiner (Succession producer). So far, there has been no cast release, though with such a big franchise, there is no doubt there will be names slipping in the future.

The Harry Potter television series will be released in 2026 through HBO Max, but it is never too early to check out the streaming service now. All eleven Harry Potter films are currently streamable through Max.
