Reboot of the Beloved Classic is Finally Coming

On Wednesday, February 28, Deadline revealed images for the upcoming reboot of The Crow (2024). The film will be directed by Rupert Sanders with Bill Skarsgård as Eric Draven aka The Crow.

Bill Skarsgård as The Crow

The film is set for release later this year in June and the images finally give audiences their first look at Skarsgård’s official take on The Crow costume. He retains the leather jacket and black makeup on his face much like Brandon Lee’s version, but also has some differences such as the lack of white makeup as well, tattoos on his chest, and short hair.

Deadline also revealed the official synopsis for the movie which reads, “Soulmates Eric Draven (Skarsgård) and Shelly Webster (FKA Twigs) are brutally murdered when the demons of her dark past catch up with them. Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to seek merciless revenge on their killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right.”

Aside from Skarsgård and Twigs, the other cast members confirmed for the movie are Isabella Wei as Zandie and Danny Huston, Laura Birn, Sami Bouajila, and Jordan Bolger in roles that haven’t been disclosed yet. The script is written by Zach Baylin and William Schnieder with Lionsgate handling distribution of the film.

The History of The Crow Reboot

Some fans might be surprised this reboot is coming given how it had been in development hell for over a decade. Several actors and directors had been attached to the project only for them to drop out. Some of the cast members that were either considered or attached to the movie included James McAvoy, Jason Mamoa, Luke Evans, Tom Hiddleston, Channing Tatum, Mark Wahlberg, and even Bill Skarsgård’s brother, Alexander, according to IMDb. At one point, the producers considered making The Crow a woman, but those plans were eventually dropped for unknown reasons. Eventually, Rupert Sanders was confirmed as director with Bill Skarsgård as The Crow and the rest was history. It will be interesting to see if this will live up to the legacy left behind by Brandon Lee with the original or at the very least, stand out enough to be considered its own thing.

The Crow is set to hit theaters June 7, 2024.
