The Next Must-Watch Television?

An adaptation of William Gibson’s classic science fiction novel Neuromancer is in the works at Apple TV+. Slated to consist of 10 episodes, the series adds to their expansive library of science fiction series, following hits such as For All Mankind Foundation, “Severance, and Invasion. Created by Graham Roland and JD Dillard, both will serve as executive producers for the series. Roland is also attached to the series as showrunner, having previously worked on AMC’s Dark Winds and Amazon’s Jack Ryan. Dillard, set to direct the pilot episode, has worked on episodes of HBO’s The Outsider, and directed the 2022 film Devotion. The project has been described by both Rolland and Dillard as a “dream” collaboration.

The Original Novel

Released in 1984, the novel became a sleeper hit. Neuromancer became a science fiction classic, winning awards such as the Hugo Award, the Nebula Award, and the Philip K. Dick Award. The novel spawned two sequels, 1986’s Count Zero and 1988 Mona Lisa Overdrive, with the trilogy helping influence the cyberpunk sub-genre.

In Gibson’s Neuromancer, the story follows Henry Case, a low-level hacker whose central nervous system is damaged after being caught stealing from his employer. Upon being approached by a US ex-military officer offering a cure, he agrees to help with a case involving a powerful artificial intelligence.

The Dream Project

The official logline for the series states, “a damaged, top-rung super-hacker named Case who is thrust into a web of digital espionage and high stakes crime with his partner Molly, a razor-girl assassin with mirrored eyes, aiming to pull a heist on a corporate dynasty with untold secrets.”

In a joint statement, Rolland and Dillard expressed their excitement to bring the novel to the screen. “We’re incredibly excited to be bringing this iconic property to Apple TV+,” Rolland and Dillard said. “Since we became friends nearly ten years ago, we’ve looked for something to team up on, so this collaboration marks a dream come true. Neuromancer has inspired so much of the science fiction that’s come after it, and we’re looking forward to bringing television audiences into Gibson’s definitive ‘cyberpunk’ world.”
