Out with the Old, In with the New

It’s been three months since Pixar released their teaser trailer for their upcoming film, Inside Out 2. On March 7, they dropped a full trailer revealing all kinds of new footage and emotions to join the cast. Here is everything to know about the new movie.

What Will the Story Be?

The beginning of the trailer starts with Riley living her everyday life and some familiar faces. Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, and Panic seem to be doing well managing her life, playing hockey, celebrating birthdays, and the occasional dentist appointment. That is, until Riley faces a new challenge in life: puberty. With puberty comes new emotions like Anxiety, shown as a frizzy-haired, orange-colored emotion revealed from the teaser. This time around, other emotions are introduced, including Envy, Ennui (or Boredom), and Embarrassment. As the trailer continues, the next scenes show Riley navigating her life in high school. Some of the new challenges she faces are making new friends, peer pressure, and even discovering her sexual orientation. Furthermore, this is implied when she speaks to some new faces, especially a girl whom Envy shows a deep admiration for.

Since she transitioned from a child into a teenager, Riley’s new emotions are becoming more complex. Moreover, her old emotions from the first film seem to be losing their grip on their control, especially Joy, who has maintained the lead for so long. Based on this trailer, it looks like Anxiety will be butting heads with Joy and eventually take over along with the new emotions. This implies that she will be the main villain of the film, as she has cast aside the old emotions, and they become “bottled up” (quite literally). Under Anxiety’s control, Riley starts to make difficult decisions like choosing between friends and relationships as well as feeling unmotivated to do anything. Therefore, it is up to the old emotions to regain control as they wander through new and strange areas like the sar-chasm.

Cast and Release Date

Inside Out 2 is directed by Kelsey Mann and written by Meg LeFauve. Returning to the cast are Kensington Tallman, Diane Lane, Kyle MacLachlan, Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Lewis Black, Tony Hale, and Liza Lapira. Ayo Edebiri, Adèle Exarchopoulos, and Paul Walter Hauser will join the cast. The film is slated for a June 14, 2024, theatrical release and is not yet rated.
