More Mario Is on the Way

Almost a year after the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, a sequel is officially in the works.

In honor of Mario Day on Sunday, March 10th, Nintendo and Illumination studios made the announcement, as well as giving a release date of April 3, 2026. Details about the sequel are scarce, including plot synopsis, new characters, and the voice cast. However, it was confirmed by the studio that Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, the directors of the original film, will return to helm the project. Whether or not the original writers will return has also yet to be revealed.

The Original Film’s Success

During a time when video game adaptations have not found much success at the box office, The Super Mario Bros. Movie beat the odds. With a price tag of $100 million, the film went on to earn $1.36 billion at the box office, becoming the second highest-grossing film of 2023, only beaten out by Barbie.

The movie starred Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad. While not finding much favor among critics, earning only 59% on Rotten Tomatoes, The Super Mario Bros. Movie was embraced by audiences with a 95% rating.

Miyamoto’s Comments

Along with the announcement, the creator of Mario, Shigeru Miyamoto, released a comment on the upcoming sequel.

“We’ll let you know the details once we’re ready to share more,” Miyamoto said. “This time too, the staff at Illumination and Nintendo are working together. We’re thinking about broadening Mario’s world further, and it’ll have a bright and fun story. We hope you’ll look forward to it!”

Miyamoto’s brief statement leaves much to the imagination and speculation as to where the filmmakers will take the story. With countless video games from the Mario library, there are endless possibilities for the story’s evolution. Notably in his comment, Miyamoto states he plan on “broadening Mario’s world further.” His statements are vague enough that they could be interpreted a few ways. Whether he’s referring to broadening the universe beyond the Mushroom Kingdom and taking inspiration from games, such as Super Mario Galaxy, or simply introducing new characters is yet to be seen.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is currency streaming on Netflix.
