The Horror Classic Returns To Its Roots

The classic horror franchise The Omen has returned. A new trailer has been released for a prequel film, The First Omen, delving into Damien Thorn’s origins.

‘The Omen’ Gets A Prequel

According to Bloody Disgusting, a new trailer for the upcoming horror film, The First Omen will be a prequel to the 1976 film The Omen. The film will follow an American woman Margaret (Nell Tiger Free) as she is sent to a church in Rome, only to uncover a dark conspiracy regarding the Antichrist, all but confirmed to be franchise lead Damien himself.

The film will be the directorial debut of Arkasha Stevenson and will be produced by David S. Gover. The First Omen will star Tawfeek Barhom, Sonia Braga, Ralph Ineson, Charles Dance, and even Bill Nighy. The film is set to be released on April 5 next month.

What Was ‘The Omen’

For those out of the loop, The Omen was a 1976 horror film following the story of Damien Thorn, the Antichrist himself. The film was directed by the legendary creative Richard Donner, director of Scrooged, The Goonies, and the original Superman film. Despite receiving middling reviews, it was a financial success and spawned three sequels over the years.

Throughout the series, the scale continually escalates as Damien embraces his role as the Antichrist and attempts to bring about Armageddon itself. As the film series has already proven its longevity, a prequel could give the series a new start and a different take on its world.

Will This Prequel Work?

As a prequel, this upcoming film can show us a new side to the original story of The Omen. This would not be the first time that The Omen was rebooted, as there was a remake in 2006 that received middling reviews. While all prequels tend to be hit-and-miss, this is especially true for horror films.

One of the worst examples would be the 2011 prequel to The Thing, which infamously lost the spirit of the first film with its use of CGI. However, there are similar examples to this one working, such as with 2017’s Annabelle: Creation.

Furthermore, all of the crew and cast members have proven their talent in previous works. As such, this might be a good omen for the film’s success.
