Horror Is No Longer an Alien Concept

H.R. Giger fans rejoice! Anyone who discovered the artist and his biomechanical style through the classic horror franchise Alien will be ecstatic at the release of the first trailer for Alien: Romulus. The horror staple is returning to its horror-filled roots.

Return to Form?

Regardless of how fans may have felt about the last entries in the series (Prometheus and Alien: Covenant were fine in their own right), there should be no complaints for this newest trailer which shows a returned emphasis on horror.

The teaser starts off with a spaceship approaching a large space vessel before cutting to a familiar claustrophobic hallway. Voices can be heard in the background begging for mercy and help with blood covering a cryo pod.

Fans are then greeted by an army of face-huggers chasing survivors. The last two shots are of leading lady Cailee Spaeney (Priscilla) and the ever-terrifying xenomorph itself.

As of now, not much is known of the film other than it being set between the original Alien(1979) and Aliens(1986). Other than that, it’s also said to be “unconnected” to any of the previous installments as stated by the film’s director Fede Álvarez( Don’t Breathe).

To further this claim, a majority cast so far are all young faces including Isabella Merced (Madame Webb), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), and David Jonsson (Rye Lane). Ridley Scott, the director of the original film, will be in the producer’s seat.

Something Familiar Mixed With Something Alien

It’s no secret that at nine entries (give or take), fans were starting to lose hope for this classic horror franchise. Not to say it had overstayed its welcome but it had straight up lost its identity.

The last two entries in the franchise, Prometheus (2012) and Alien: Covenant (2017) felt more like sci-fi films with slight elements of horror rather than horror films set in a sci-fi setting. With that being said, this new entry looks promising as well as familiar. Fans may get deja vu from the way the trailer starts out with the ship approaching the large vessel.

It feels reminiscent of one of the video game entries in the series Alien: Isolation. This game sees players guiding Ripley’s daughter through an abandoned space station in the midst of getting overrun by an onslaught of xenomorphs. Despite not being connected to the other films, Cailee Spaeney’s character looks like she could easily pass off as Ripley’s daughter.

Fans won’t have to spend too much time waiting as this Alien: Romulus is set to release in theaters this August 16, 2024.

A lover of gore and over the top violence, no movie can make my stomach squirm. The only thing better than a bloody death scene is a well choreographed stunt. Whether it be action or horror, if it has blood in it, then I've likely already seen it.
