"The NeverEnding Story" Continues

The 80’s classic The NeverEnding Story is returning to the big screen. The British-Australian production company See-Saw Films has revealed plans to create a new adaptation of the classic fantasy film.

The ‘NeverEnding Story’ Continues

According to Variety, the classic 1984 film The NeverEnding Story will get a new live-action adaptation from the production company See-Saw Films. The film will be a co-production between See-Saw Films and Michael Ende Productions, the company of the late German author of the original book.

Furthermore, this is an entire series adapting Ende’s work instead of just one film. According to the article, Ende’s company has been looking for the right studio to produce the film for several years before deciding on See-Saw.

Because this was only just announced, viewers have little more information about the upcoming series, including its cast and release date.

What is ‘The NeverEnding Story?’

For those out of the loop, The NeverEnding Story is a 1984 fantasy film widely remembered as a classic. It was adapted from the 1979 book by the late German author Michael Ende and was directed by Wolfgang Petersen.

The film followed outcast Bastian Bux as he discovered an enchanted storybook telling the story of warrior Atreyu trying to save the land of Fantasia. For its grand story, the film stands alongside the likes of Willow and The Dark Crystal among 80’s fantasy films.

While the first film was successful, the same could not be said of its sequels. The Next Chapter and especially Escape from Fantasia were both panned by critics, effectively killing the franchise.

See-Saw Films

As for See-Saw Films, the British-Australian company has a reputable track record in producing films. Some of their hits include Lion, The Power of the Dog, and even the Best Picture Winner The King’s Speech

Ian Canning, one of the producers at See-Saw, said “The story is both timely and timeless, and really has an opportunity to be told in a fresh way.” He went on to explain how the film has a message that is valuable for any age, with its emphasis on the power of children’s imagination.

Because 80’s nostalgia is currently popular, as well as the reputation of See-Saw, the upcoming adaptation shows great potential.
