‘The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story’ Is Released to YouTube

The Short Film Sees Miles Morales Struggle With Mental Health

In June of 2023, Marvel Entertainment and Sony Pictures released a seven-minute-long short film for the Annecy International Animation Film Festival that bridged the two big-screen Spider-Verse films. The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story follows Miles Morales (played by Shameik Moore) as he struggles with the great power he is responsible for. Finally, as of March 27th, 2024, the short film is accessible to the large audience that had fallen in love with Miles’ story in the first place. Beware, minor spoilers ahead.

Inside The Spider-Verse

In 2018, the world was blessed with the gorgeous, comic-book-looking, uniquely built film Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse. In 2023, the sequel Spiderman: Across the Spider-Verse would find equal success, telling a story that would further expand the troubles Miles had dealt with in the previous film. However, about two weeks after the sequel’s delivery, Marvel Entertainment and Sony Pictures quietly released a short film following Miles as he grapples with the responsibilities of being his world’s spiderman.

The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story shows Miles battling his grief after his Uncle Aaron’s (played by Mahershala Ali) death and the weight of saving the people of his city on a daily basis. The juxtaposition of the bright colors and the dark shadows that creep up on Miles help to portray his anxiety and the metaphorical ghosts that haunt him.

Mental Health Superheroes

It does not need to be said that superheroes, since their creation in the 20th century, have strongly influenced children and adults who consume comic-book media. The new Marvel and Sony short film acknowledges and explores mental health difficulties through Miles’ mourning, guilt, and fear that leads him into a full-blown panic attack. The Jarelle Dampier-directed piece shows fans that a character they might look up to still struggles with real human troubles. Like the X-Men inspiring fans to accept differences and Iron Man demonstrating common symptoms of anxiety, Spiderman, in this short film, experiences his struggles and shows a healthy way of coping with those anxieties.

If viewers are not intrigued by the short story, the artistry definitely will. The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story is now free to watch on YouTube.
