The Legacy Characters Regroup

The lineup for Scream 7 continues to grow with legacy star Courtney Cox in talks to return for the next installment. She will be joining everyone’s favorite final girl, Neve Campbell (Sidney Prescott) if she officially joins.

Those Who Won’t Return for ‘Scream 7’

After the controversial firing of 2022’s Scream (also known as Scream 5) and Scream VI star Melissa Barrera, enthusiasm around Scream 7 quickly diminished. Furthermore, with reports of Jenna Ortega opting out from participating in the film, Paramount and Spyglass found themselves in a tough situation regarding how to continue the franchise. Now, months after the stars leaving the franchise, and director Christopher Landon dropping out due to the toxic environment, news has begun to ramp up for Scream 7.

The Lineup Thus Far

News broke a few weeks ago that Neve Campbell, star of the first four films in the Scream franchise, was set to make her big return. This news was paired with Kevin Williamson, the original creator of Scream who also wrote the scripts for Scream, Scream 2, and Scream 4, being brought on to direct Scream 7. Furthermore, the currently untitled sequel will be written by Guy Busick, based on a story from Busick and James Vanderbilt.

The announcement of Courtney Cox in talks to return for Scream 7 comes after weeks of speculation that she and Patrick Dempsey will reprise their roles. To date, Cox is the only character who has appeared in all six Scream films after David Arquette’s beloved character, Dewey Riley was killed off in the fifth film, and Campbell skipped out on Scream VI over pay disputes with the studio.

Future of ‘Scream‘

There is still a fair amount of information left up in the air. Plot details or a synopsis have yet to be announced. Moreover, other cast members have yet to be added to the suspect list. Due to the fact that several major headlines and reports regarding Scream 7 have come out in the past several weeks, it’s likely that story details will come out as well.

With Cox and Dempsey being rumored to return, it stirs up questions regarding the return of other franchise stars. With Barrera and Ortega out, it seems unlikely Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savory Brown would carry over into Scream 7. However, Hayden Panettiere, who made her debut in the franchise in Scream 4, seems like a possibility after her big return in Scream VI. For now, fans will have to be patient and see if Scream can recover from the controversy of the choices made by the studio.

Scream VI is currently streaming on Paramount+.
