Russell Crowe Reveals ‘The Pope’s Exorcist’ Could Have More to Come

“The Pope’s Exorcist” star Russell Crowe teases that more films on the controversial figure may be ahead. Peter DeSouza-Feighoney stars as Henry in “The Pope’s Exorcist.”

The Life of an Exorcist is Rife With Material

In life, most embark on a career path, perhaps as a teacher, a nurse, or a scientist. But if those professions don’t pique any interest, there’s always the option of becoming an exorcist. While getting rid of demons isn’t an easy task, exorcists handle the job with grace—or end up drenched in projectile vomit. No one knows this better than Russell Crowe, who portrayed exorcist Gabriele Amorth in The Pope’s Exorcist (2023). Based on the Vatican’s head exorcist-in-chief, Father Amorth completed over 100,000 exorcisms during his tenure.

Because exercising demons didn’t keep the controversial hero busy enough, he took up writing as a side hustle; authoring works about his experiences warding off the devil. Telling stories that haven’t been told is vital in the TV/film sphere, and Netflix embraced Gabriele’s unique perspective. Furthermore, last year, The Pope’s Exorcist became a hit on the streaming platform while simultaneously playing in theaters. Capitalizing on the film’s immense popularity, Columbia Pictures/Screen Gems greenlit a sequel, and one year later, Bloody Disgusting has teased that a trilogy may be on the horizon.

Development “Hell?”

As Bloody Disgusting reports, Virgin Media Television’s The Six O’Clock Show interviewed Crowe. According to the star, a trilogy was in discussion at Screen Gems, but due to the studio’s reshuffling, development has been slow to take off. In addition, Crowe discussed the ample content that writers have at their disposal for prospective films since Gabriele was a prolific author. He said: “And remember that the man that’s based on Gabriele Amorth wrote twelve books. So, we have more than enough source material to do one or two more of those films. But that probably won’t be until next year.”

Movie Making Is Like Performing An Exorcism

Based on Crowe’s words, The Pope’s Exorcist 2 and even 3 are likely to get made. However, performing an exorcism will be painstaking and exhaustive and might end in some bloodshed (aka development setbacks) because it involves Hollywood, after all.
