The Cult Franchise of the Immortal Scotsman Makes A Comeback

Henry Cavill spoke about his upcoming role as Connor MacLeod in the Highlander reboot during Cinemacon this past April 10th. The anticipated remake of the 1986 cult classic has been in production limbo for a while now. With Cavill teasing how he’s brushing up on his sword skills, there is only hope for what’s in store.

Connor MacLeod’s Story Retold

In 1986, Russell Mulcahy directed a film about a 16th-century Scotsman, named Connor Macleod, who discovers he is one of the world’s immortal warriors and must fight for the prize for ultimate power. The film, written by Gregory Widen, had unfortunately not done well upon its release. And yet, the film would only be the first of a franchise telling the tales of the immortal warriors.

Though there is little word on how close the reboot will coincide with the original story, there are still assumptions to be made. Now, thirty-eight years after the original film’s release, and seventeen years after the last movie, director Chad Stahelski (known for the John Wick film series) teaming up with Lionsgate Films to finally reboot the series.

Mike Finch, who previously worked with Chad Stahelski with John Wick: Chapter 4, has been named as the writer for the reboot. Though the film’s franchise has had some negative reception in the past, Cavill has teased that the project will come out better than anticipated.

He told fans at Cinemacon, “I’m a lover of the original movies, for better or for worse, and it’s one of those things where when I was reading the script for the first time I wasn’t quite too sure where they were going to go with it” (according to Deadline).

Cavill’s Statement

The world has seen Henry Cavill in action roles before whether it has been as Superman in Man of Steel, Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher, or even as Sherlock Holmes in Enola Holmes. Clearly, he has a bit of a typecast put on him, however that only means he plays the part of the action hero too well. At Cinemacon, Cavill touched base with fans on filming the Highlander reboot, saying, “If you thought you’d seen me do sword work before, you haven’t seen anything yet”.

Sadly, there is not much else known about the upcoming film. There is a lot of content from the original franchise to work off of, but there have been no cast and character leaks yet to hint at what might be coming. Until more news arrives from the current filming of the project, the original Highlander film can be streamed on Amazon Prime Video.
