Get Ready for a Spooky, Satirical Comeback

This CinemaCon gave us many returning franchises, even from horror. Paramount has announced that Neal H. Horitz will produce a reboot of the Scary Movie franchise.

Humorous Horror Returns

As reported by IGN, the Scary Movie franchise is set to return. Paramount made this announcement during the massive CinemaCon event last week, where many other upcoming films were revealed. This will be the first film in the franchise released since Scary Movie 5 a decade ago. Furthermore, Neal H. Horitz will serve as producer, having worked on Fast and the Furious, The Boys, and the Sonic the Hedgehog films. Interestingly, this will be the first film made by Paramount Pictures, the owners of Scream itself, (a film parodied by Scary Movie). However, as the film was only just announced, no release date or cast has been revealed yet.

What was ‘Scary Movie’?

For readers who forgot, Scary Movie was a series of parody movies that made fun of the horror genre. The franchise was created by Keenen Ivory Wayans, Shawn Wayans, and Marlon Wayans, with the latter two starring in the films. The films poked fun at not just the Scream franchise with Ghostface as the mascot, but others such as The Ring and I Know What You Did Last Summer. With its biting satire of the genre, Scary Movie was a bloody success and spawned four sequels that parodied even more popular franchises. The films were released throughout the aughts, with the last one, Scary Movie 5, released in 2013.

The Gruesome Death of ‘Scary Movie’

However, the popularity of the Scary Movie franchise would wane over the years as they got worse ratings and reviews. Even worse was the reputation of series co-creators Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer. The duo became infamous for their horrendously bad parody films such as Vampires Suck and Epic Movie which many believe ruined the entire genre of film. In recent years, however, Scary Movie’s brand has returned with horror parodies such as Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey and the Steamboat Willie films. With the evolution of parody, horror, and satire in today’s film market, Scary Movie can make a comeback.
