Phoebe Waller-Bridge To Write and Produce for “Tomb Raider”

Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s professional experience and personal interests are united in a new take on a classic character. Waller-Bridge gives the camera a knowing glance as the titular "Fleabag."

From One-Woman Show to Executive Producer

In January of 2023, there were rumors of Phoebe Waller-Bridge being attached to Amazon TV’s new Tomb Raider project. In June of 2023, she confirmed those rumors herself. Now, almost a year later, Amazon has confirmed her as the writer and executive producer of the upcoming series.

“The Perfect Final Step”

Though she rose to fame through her one-woman show turned comedy series, Fleabag, Phoebe Waller-Bridge is not a stranger to the action-adventure genre, having been a writer for James Bond in No Time to Die and an actor in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. These two titles are especially noteworthy because, to quote Waller-Bridge in an IGN interview, “the character of Lara Croft was inspired by Indiana Jones and James Bond.” She has also described her love of the Tomb Raider games when she was younger. All these experiences combined make her involvement with this show feel “like the perfect final step in my own personal adventure through this kind of franchise world.”

What Can We Expect?

While there have been few details released on the specific nature of the upcoming show, there are a few hints and indicators that this iteration of Croft may be more in line with earlier games.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Phoebe Waller-Bridge said that she would like to “bring back some of that 90’s vibe.” The first Tomb Raider game was released in 1994, so there’s a distinct possibility that this depiction of Lara Croft and her world might be more in line with the first few games.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge rose to fame through her dryly comedic series Fleabag and has continued working on several other comedic projects, such as The Café. While Crystal Dynamics’s most recent Tomb Raider trilogy (Tomb Raider (2013), Rise of the Tomb Raider (2016), and Shadow of the Tomb Raider (2018)) focuses on a more austere iteration of Croft, the comedic leanings of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s previous work may indicate a return to the more seasoned, wise-cracking Croft of previous games. If so, that return would coincide neatly with Crystal Dynamics’s remaster of the original three games, released in February of this year. No word yet on whether the Croft actress will be wearing low-poly inserts.

The show is still in the early stages of production. As such, it does not currently have a release date, but stay tuned for updates!
