Is Capcom Planning on Making a ‘Resident Evil’ Remake?

Rumors Swirl About Either a ‘Resident Evil’ Remake or ‘Resident Evil 9’ for the Series’ Anniversary

Happy almost 30th anniversary to Capcom’s hit horror series, Resident Evil! With eight mainline titles, double the spin-offs, and even some movies, what can Capcom do to commemorate one of their longest running series? Rumors say one of two things: another remake, or a new addition to the main storyline.

Another REmake?

For the past few years, Capcom has been cranking out remakes, or REmakes (a nod to Resident Evil’s abbreviation, RE). The Resident Evil 2 REmake was released on January 5th, 2019, and followed the next year by the Resident Evil 3 REmake. Capcom got back on making remakes with the Resident Evil 4 REmake, released on March 24th, 2023 – the most recent Resident Evil game to date. Save for COVID, Capcom has released a Resident Evil REmake every year, statistically making a REmake very likely.

Leakers and insiders back up the rumors too. X/Twitter user PRE_Alarabiya, insider DanielRPK, and content creator Biohazard Declassified all claim that Capcom aims to remake the original Resident Evil by 2026 – which coincides with the series’ 30th anniversary. Resident Evil was released on March 22nd, 1996, with its REmake having been released exactly six years later on March 22nd, 2002. A remake of this REmake has been a long time coming.

Another Mainline?

The second half of rumors have much less content to back them up but involve the possibility of the next mainline installment – Resident Evil 9. Another industry insider, Dusk Golem, has a lot of information on the topic. According to both them and PRE_Alarabiya, Resident Evil 9 will follow Leon S. Kennedy and his introduction in the current timeline, taking place in Southeast Asia in 2025. Leon S. Kennedy has not appeared in the Resident Evil game timeline since Resident Evil 6.

It is important to take these speculations with a grain of salt. Dusk Golem obtained this information in 2021, specifically after Capcom’s security incident in November 2020. Dusk Golem says that Capcom could reveal Resident Evil 9 in the summer of 2024 with a January 2025 release, or that they could push back a release into 2026. Capcom themselves have said nothing about new Resident Evil releases.

Nothing is confirmed yet, but keep an eye out for the PlayStation Showcase 2024 and the Summer Games Fest 2024 for any potential Resident Evil news. PlayStation Showcase is coming sometime in May or June 2024, while Summer Games Fest 2024 is slated for June 7th, 2024.
