Writing Team for ‘Green Lantern’ TV Series Confirmed

James Gunn Says DCU Series Will Involve A “Crack Team of Writers”

The DC Universe has enlisted an esteemed team of writers for The Green Lantern TV series Lanterns.

As IGN reports, co-CEO of DC Studios, James Gunn, has verified that the writing group encompasses the talents of Damon Lindelof (Lost, Watchmen), Chris Mundy (Ozark), and Tom King (Eisner Award-winning comic book writer).

James Gunn teased fans with this news via Instagram, where he posted: “Yes, it’s true. The Lanterns DCU series is putting together a crack team of writers, based on a wonderful pilot script and bible by Chris Mundy, Tom King, and Damon Lindelof. A hearty welcome to Chris and @damonlindelof as they join the DC Studios family (no welcome necessary for old @tomking_tk, who has been here nearly since inception).”

What’s the History of Green Lantern?

Green Lantern is a DC Comics superhero franchise featuring characters who wield powerful rings, granting them extraordinary abilities. The first character, Alan Scott, was introduced in 1940, and thereafter, the universe evolved in the Silver Age with Hal Jordan and the introduction of the Green Lantern Corps, expanding into science fiction. Currently, it spans the mediums of television, films, and even video games, with the most notable characters including John Stewart, Kyle Rayner, Simon Baz, Jessica Cruz, Jo Mullein, and Guy Gardner.

What Will The Series Be About?

As Variety reported in January of 2023, Peter Safran, DC Studios co-head, declared that the upcoming series would be a massive HBO extravaganza on par with award-winning series like True Detective. Furthermore, the television spectacle would revolve around the characters Hal Jordan and John Stewart of the Green Lantern Corps.

According to Safran’s comments last year, together the two heroes are called upon to tackle a mystery that will tie nicely into the central story that will unfold across film and television.

More recently, IGN reported that Gunn expanded on Safran’s plot tease by confirming that Lanterns would involve the concept of uncovering an “ancient horror on earth,” with the two famous Green Lanterns corps members fighting crime as super cops on Precinct Earth.

Final Thoughts

Fans have been awaiting the green light or “green lantern” from DC. In the meantime, they can rejoice in the writing team that promises strong storytelling, as well as more announcements from DC studio heads about what to expect in the months to come.
