Entire Box Office Weekend Underperforms

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga yielded a domestic disappointment, earning $32 million over the 4-day holiday weekend and $26.3 Million over the normal 3-day span. With an estimated budget of $168 million, it may be tough for the production to recoup its investment, let alone generate revenue.

The Numbers

Although there is a well-deserved emphasis on domestic numbers, they indeed only tell part of the story that covers earnings. International markets are to be considered, as Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga has grossed $64.8 million worldwide. Fans are now remembering other Memorial Day weekend blunders, such as Baywatch from 2017 and Casper from 1995. Baywatch opened at $23 million domestically and Casper earned $22.5 million over its weekend. The inflation adjustments for Casper’s earnings are more generous, giving an approximate yield of $39 million.

The film shared an opening weekend with the family-friendly live-action/animated hybrid The Garfield Movie, starring Chris Pratt. Although Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga opened number one, The Garfield Movie nipped at its heels through the weekend, earning a gross domestic of $31.1 million. After opening the week prior, John Krasinksi’s animated film, If, was third at $20.9 million. Out of the leading box office films, the latest Mad Max installment is still enjoying the highest rating, with an IMDb score of 8.0 out of 10. The Garfield Movie (5.9), If (6.7), Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (7.2), and The Fall Guy (7.1) have not favored as well with audiences.

Franchise History

Despite being a warrior on the road, The Mad Max franchise has historically been less so at the box office. Adjusting for inflation, Mad Max: Fury Road yielded the highest earnings at $53.3 million over a standard 3-day opening weekend. Of the original three, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome enjoyed the most success with an adjusted $19.1 million opening. Fury Road’ is currently rated slightly higher than Furiosa’ at 8.1.

However, the film’s recognition doesn’t stop there. Fury Road’ won 6 out of its 10 Academy Award nominations, winning for Best Film Editing, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Sound Editing. Time will tell if Mad Max’s latest effort will be enough to warrant additional films.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is in theaters worldwide.
