John Hawkes Joins Cast of ‘Criminal’

John Hawkes joins the Amazon MGM series 'Criminal,’ adapted from Brubaker and Phillips' crime-woven graphic novel. John Hawkes stars in 'Night Country: Part 1' (2024).

Another Eye-Opener to the All Star Line Up

Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips’ graphic novel-adapted series Criminal has added a new cast member to its star-studded lineup. According to Deadline, John Hawkes (True Detective: Night Country) has come on board for the Amazon MGM series. Before this announcement, Amazon had teased that the cast would include acting giants: Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Adria Arjona (Andor), Richard Jenkins (Six Feet Under), Logan Browning (The Perfection), Kadeem Hardison (A Different World), Pat Healy (Better Call Saul), and Taylor Selé (BMF).

What’s ‘Criminal’ About?

Featuring an intricate web of crime-woven stories, Hawkes portrays Sebastian Hyde, who is on the upward swing after recovering from a stroke but still experiencing the aftermath — restricted to using a cane. His business sights involve managing a gambling establishment, and his character is described as vacillating between appearing at ease and lashing out as a brute thug.

A History of Scintillating Psychological Thrillers

Fans will remember Hawkes from Season 4 of Issa Lopez’s True Detective, with Jodie Foster taking on the titular role. Before joining that mystery-packed universe, he was part of critically acclaimed smaller films, such as The Peanut Butter Falcon. Moreover, he showcased his acting talents in Nicholas Winding Refn’s crime drama Too Old to Die Young and the Deadwood reunion movie.

Most notably, he held a coveted role in the Oscar-winning Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

His work has been lauded many times, having garnered Best Actor from the Independent Spirit Awards and nods for Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards. Additionally, he has won other awards, including an Independent Spirit Award and an Academy Award nomination for Winter’s Bone. Beyond his acting prowess, fans may be surprised to learn he’s not limited to the acting sphere, as a prolific songwriter — authoring one of the songs that he performs on the show.

Who Else Is Involved?

Previously, Deadline announced that the initial four episodes would involve the directors, Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden. Along with their direction, co-creator Brubaker will serve as a co-showrunner with Jordan Harper, who’s a well-known crime fiction author. Executive Producers also include Brubaker and Harper alongside Sean Phillips, a multi-talented graphic artist, Sarah Carbiener, and Philipp Barnett. Furthermore, Legendary Television is acting as an executive producer in collaboration with the others.

As of this publication, the upcoming new series has not been given a release date. However, in the meantime, check out Hawkes in other projects, such as   True Detective: Night Country: Part One, currently streaming on Max.
