Futurama is Back! (Again)

The official Season 12 trailer of Futurama has been released on Hulu’s YouTube page. Within hours the video accrued more than half a million views, the show has had a troubled past with multiple cancellations but the Planet Express seemingly won’t stay down forever.

The latest season of Futurama will conclude the original 20-episode order from Hulu to extend the series. However, this past November Hulu announced the renewal of the to produce 20 additional episodes that will extend through 2026. Despite the first season of Futurama premiering 25 years ago, Hulu was able to re-assemble the original cast, all featured in the new trailer.

“On this orbit around the sun, our occasionally heroic crew embarks on mind-bending adventures involving birthday party games to the death, the secrets of Bender’s ancestral robot village, A.I. friends (and enemies), impossibly cute beanbags, and the true 5 million-year-old story behind the consciousness-altering substance known as coffee. And, of course, the next chapter in Fry and Leela’s fateful, time-twisted romance.”

Billy West (Fry/Professor Farnsworth/Dr. Zoidberg/Zapp Brannigan), John DiMaggio (Bender), Katey Sagal (Leela), Tress MacNeille (Mom), Maurice LaMarche (Kif Kroker/Calculon/Morbo), Lauren Tom (Amy Wong/Inez Wong), Phil LaMarr (Hermes Conrad), and David Herman (Scruffy) all comprise the main voice actors. DiMaggio was at risk for not re-joining his co-stars due to contract disputes with Hulu. He would eventually end the standoff and revealed in a Phoenix Fan Fusion panel that Hulu’s production team was even prepared to replace the voice of Bender with a new guest star every episode. After a long fan-driven social media campaign in support of DiMaggio, he playfully referred to the ordeal as “Bendergate.”

Even though Futurama has existed for 25 years, this will only be the show’s 12th season, due to a lot of shuffling since its original premiere on Fox. After 5 seasons, the show went out of production in 2003. But in 2007, Futurama would remain on Fox and release new episodes as 4 straight-to-DVD movies, Bender’s Big Score, The Beast with a Billion Backs, Bender’s Game, and Into the Wild Green Yonder. Comedy Central later picked up the show in 2010 for 52 total episodes. After enduring another cancellation in 2013, Hulu would revive the show 10 years later. The series has maintained its popularity over the decades but has struggled with critic reviews. Futurama as a whole bears an IMDb rating of 8.5/10 but the episodes from the first season with Hulu averaged a score of 6.8.

All episodes of Futurama are available for streaming on Hulu and Disney+.
