Is A New Day On The Horizon For Jack Bauer?
It’s never been a secret that Hollywood thrives on mining old popular IP to try and refurbish it for a new generation. Film adaptations of old series are also not a new tactic when trying to find a box office hit. Mission Impossible, The Man From U.N.C.L.E, and most recently, The Fall Guy, were all based on series from the past and had varying degrees of success. Now, in the hopes of creating another hit, 24 is getting a film adaptation.
24 Hours
24 was an action series that premiered on Fox for nine seasons, running from November 2001 to July 2014. A television film titled 24: Redemption premiered in November 2008, airing between the sixth and seventh seasons. Created by Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran, the series followed up with a spin-off, 24: Legacy, which only ran for one season before being canceled. Despite the main series consisting of 24 episodes, 24: Legacy only had 12.
The series starred Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer, a counterterrorism agent working with CTU (Counter Terrorist Unit). The show’s main hook was depicting the series’ events in real time. Each season took place during a 24-hour period, consisting of 24 episodes, with each episode representing one hour from that day.
In keeping with the flow of the series, a time clock would appear with split screens to show how multiple scenes were concurrent with each other. Within the high-octane, adrenaline-filled storytelling, 24 became known for its use of plot twists and exploration of ethical dilemmas. Some of the recurring characters alongside Sutherland’s Bauer were Leslie Hope, Sarah Clarke, Elisha Cuthbert, Dennis Haysbert, and Eric Balfour.

The 24 Movie
Few details are currently known, as the movie is in early development. It’s also uncertain whether the movie will continue the television movie or serve as a reboot for the franchise. Likewise, it has yet to be revealed if Sutherland is returning for the film.
The studio has been interested in revitalizing the franchise for years, with a continuation of the main series, a spin-off, and even a prequel following a young Jack Bauer being tossed around. Back in June, Brian Grazer, co-founder of Imagine Entertainment, revealed the project’s development on MSNBC’s Squawk Box.
“Image has always played in that zone where there is that high probability chance that it will be successful in movie theaters,” Grazer explained.
“It’s great for us because we’ve built, over 30 years, over 100 different products and brands, whether it’s Backdraft, which I’m now going to do today with Glen Powell, or whether it’s 24, a movie that we’re going to do in a very interesting way with Disney and Fox.”
The concept of making a film adaptation of 24 seems a bit challenging storywise, especially since the main attraction of the series was the use of real-time.
Since a movie couldn’t use the 24-hour block in a day, it’ll be interesting to see how they incorporate real-time into the film if they do adopt it. Perhaps the studio is looking to the film 1917 for inspiration as to how the war epic incorporated real-time into its story. For now, fans of the series will have to wait for more details to emerge.
24 is now streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.
