“I’ve Waited A Long Time For This Team-Up”
The end is near — well, for trailers for Deadpool & Wolverine, which is a promising sign because it means its theatrical release is coming very soon — in less than a week. The final trailer for the upcoming Marvel movie is making waves online as we see a couple of quick new snippets of the film including new glimpses of Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova, a full look at Lady Deadpool, and the surprise return of X-23, played by Dafne Keen.
Who Is X-23?
As IGN reports, the character X-23 is a surprise throwback to James Mangold’s Logan (2017). In the Wolverine swansong, Keen portrayed the 11-year-old daughter of the titular character.
However, like all good superhero franchise swansongs, the hero has clawed his way back into Hollywood due to immense public demand for more films. So, after years in the shadows, Wolverine has resurfaced, and his counterpart X-23 is by his side.
Furthermore, she is no longer just a middle-school kid; she has developed into a 19-year-old fluent English speaker. In fact, she’s actually a clone of Wolverine with sharp claws and regenerative healing properties at her disposal.
When The Levity Breaks
Unlike the other trailers for Deadpool & Wolverine, this one provides less laughter in favor of more emotional beats, adding another layer to the highly-anticipated film.
In particular, there’s a touching moment when X-23 tries to lift Wolverine’s spirits, but Wolverine responds bitterly, claiming he’s not suited for the task.
X-23 reinforces his sentiment, acknowledging he may have always seemed unfit but emphasizing that he ‘was always wrong until he wasn’t.’
