The 'Endgame' Directors' Eye An MCU Return
Joe and Anthony Russo shot into superstardom after directing several films for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. According to recent reports, Marvel hopes to bring the ‘Infinity War’ directors back into the fold.
A Marvelous Rise
Joe and Anthony Russo first caught the eye of Marvel studios after working on Community. Their direction of the show’s famous paintball episodes showed the studio that these two men were more than just comedy directors. Since their first Marvel project, Captain America:Winter Soldier, the Russos have rapidly ascended the ranks of up-and-coming Hollywood directors. The brothers found their greatest success with their beloved Avengers’ films, which showcased over a decade of interconnected storytelling. Following Marvel, the Russos attempted to branch out creatively and move away from the cinematic universe that made them famous. Their more recent projects like The Gray Man and Cherry have been released to mixed receptions from audiences and critics. This lack of post-Marvel success has led many to wonder what could be next for the duo.

Righting The Ship
The last film the Russo brothers directed for Marvel was Avengers:Endgame. Endgame capped off Marvel’s expansive infinity saga and went on to become one of the highest-earning films ever released. The studio’s output following Endgame, however, has failed to reach this level of success and has left some worried about the franchise’s long-term health. High-profile sequels to films like Captain Marvel and Antman that would have easily succeeded at the box office in the past have struggled to turn substantial profits. The studio’s television output on Disney Plus has also slowly begun to slow down with the most recent premier, Secret Invasion, bringing in the least viewers of any Marvel show. The success of the next two Avengers films is significant for Marvel to regain some of their lost audience. A return to form for Marvel and the Russos can be exactly what both parties need to find guaranteed critical and commercial success after some recent troubles.
Catch the latest from the Marvel Cinematic Universe when Deadpool and Wolverine releases on July 26.
