Teaser For Chris Jericho’s Wrestling-Horror ‘Dark Match’

Blood And Sweat Were Crucial To Reaching The Festival Circuit

Darren Aronofsky’s Oscar-nominated film, The Wrestler (2008), showcased how wrestlers have to contend with grisly injuries that come along with the back-breaking stunts and sometimes even induce their own injuries to drum up visceral realism. And now, the upcoming horror Dark Match takes the onscreen wrestling violence to greater levels of disturbing by featuring a bloodthirsty cult leader.

What’s The Movie About?

According to IMDb, the wrestling film set in the ‘80s focuses on a moderate wrestling company desperately trying to hit the big leagues. By following the money, they are led to a lucrative opportunity in a rural town.

However, the consequences of this financial decision result in a gory outcome, beyond normal wrestling blood spurting — as they come face-to-face with the village’s prophet. Furthermore, the lesson inside their wrestling arena is a universally sound one — chasing money does not always create success if the trade-off is a supremely frightening mess.

The film stars Ayisha Issa (Transplant) and Steven Ogg (Grand Theft Auto V, The Walking Dead), alongside wrestling great Chris Jericho (Terrifier 2).

Who’s Behind It?

As Bloody Disgusting reports, director/writer Lowell Dean (WolfCop) helms this highly-anticipated project. In an interview with the publication, Dean describes how he had to undergo the filmmaking process akin to a professional wrestler in which his blood and sweat were crucial.

Moreover, he reflects on how when he penned the script, he wasn’t entirely sure if the film’s plot was too outlandish to get made, but with a strong team behind him, he was able to bring the gritty story to life.

Dark Match recently made its debut at Fantasia Film Festival this past weekend and is expected to be released later this year.
