A Musical for Deux
Todd Philips’ next installment of the Joker has just released a glimpse of what is to take place in the sequel. The story will revolve around Arthur Fleck and his romance with Harley Quinn in the form of a musical.
Joker and Harley Quinn
Expect to see Gotham’s Arkham Asylum where the Joker is imprisoned after the events of the first film. After becoming a star in Gotham City, this is where he meets Harley Quinn, an inmate who becomes increasingly obsessed the Joker. Proving to be just as funny as he is, the two will continue a campaign of chaos across Gotham City. ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ will also star Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin and In Bruges) and Catherine Keener (Get Out and Being John Malkovich), and will include Zazie Beetz (Atlanta and Deadpool 2), who will be reprising her role from Joker. The first movie achieved 11 Oscar nominations while remaining a box office hit, at its release it was the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.
In a July 2024 interview with Variety, Todd Phillips clarified “Joker: Folie à Deux will be separate from the other upcoming films from DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran’s slate, like “Superman,” and exist in its own separate world. The same goes for Matt Reeves’ “The Batman: Part II,” which tells its own standalone story. Gaga’s Harley Quinn will exist separately from Margot Robbie’s character, seen in “Birds of Prey” and “The Suicide Squad,” and Kaley Cuoco’s animated character from the Max series.” Yet again, Phillips returns to direct this next installment with the script being co-written alongside Scott Silver and co-producing with Bradley Cooper. ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ is set to release in theaters October 4, 2024 after premiering at the Venice Film Festival in early September 2024.
Joaquin Phoenix Portrayal
With Joaquin Phoenix already being a critically acclaimed actor, in 2019 the success of the Joker only rocketed his name back to the top of the list. After receiving multiple award nominations for his performances in Gladiator, The Master, and Her. His performance as Arhur Fleck, an isolated and mentally ill comedian in 1980s Gotham City not only reignited fans love of the iconic DC character. It yet again reimagined a role that felt untouchable after Heath Ledger’s legendary performance in The Dark Knight. Phoenix’s performance distinguishes itself from Ledgers performance while also respecting it because each feels like it’s own complete take on the character.
