Timothée Chalamet Is Bob Dylan In  ‘A Complete Unknown’ Trailer

The Film Is James Mangold's First Music Biopic Since 2005's 'Walk The Line'

The first trailer for James Mangold’s (Ford V. Ferrari, and Walk The Line) Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, sees Timothée Chalamet bringing the iconic folk singer to life. The highly-anticipated biopic will focus on the singer’s early years in New York City, leading up to his career changing performance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival when he strapped on an electric guitar for the first time.

The Plot

In the beginning of the trailer we see Chalamet beginning to take center stage and sing one of Dylan’s most treasured classics from the 60s A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall. This sets the tone for the rest of the trailer that showcases Dylan’s rise to stardom as a legend in folk music. As the song plays throughout the entire trailer we see Dylan stepping into his craft while being caught in a love triangle between Joan Baez (Monica Barbaro) and Sylvie Russo (Elle Fanning).

The film’s official synopsis reads: “Set in the influential New York music scene of the early 60s, A Complete Unknown follows 19-year-old Minnesota musician Bob Dylan’s meteoric rise as a folk singer to concert halls and the top of the charts – his songs and mystique becoming a worldwide sensation – culminating in his groundbreaking electric rock and roll performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965.”

The film also stars Edward Norton, Boyd Holbrook, Dan Folger, and Scoot McNairy.

The Mangold Effect

Mangold is most notably recognized for his directorial work on the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line, which garnered immense critical acclaim in 2005, earning five Academy Award nominations, including a Best Actor Nomination for Joaquin Phoenix and Best Actress win for Reese Witherspoon.

According to Variety, “Mangold has described Dylan in his movie as ‘a wanderer who comes in from Minnesota with a fresh name and a fresh outlook on life.’ His arrival in New York ignites an ‘upheaval in the folk community and what they thought was proper folk and illicit folk.’”

The real-life Dylan, who is 83, provided notes on the script and had multiple meetings with Mangold. Production took place in March, with filming in both New York and New Jersey, and has since concluded. The film has been acquired for distribution by Searchlight Pictures. It is produced by Fred Berger, Bob Bookman, Peter Jaysen, Alex Heineman, Jeff Rosen, Alan Gasmer, Timothée Chalamet, and James Mangold.

A Complete Unknown is expected to release theatrically in December 2024.
