Matt Smith Deals With Sinister Forces In Trailer For ‘Starve Acre’

Something Sinister is in the Countryside

Starve Acre follows Richard and Juliette, a couple living in 1970s rural England with their son, Owen. All of a sudden, Owen begins to act strangely in ways that turn the family’s quiet countryside life into chaos. Juliette turns to her community for peace and comfort while her archaeologist husband digs further — almost obsessively — for answers.

Starve Acre Trailer

The trailer opens with a scenic view of a farm in the countryside, which quickly turns dark as the voice of a woman calls out for someone named Owen to breathe. In the next scene, the woman sits slumped over in a chair sobbing as a man asks where Owen is. The audience isn’t given any insight into what happened to Owen, but whatever the incident was, it caused tension between the woman and her husband, Richard. Richard begins to act strangely, refusing to speak to his wife and going on as if nothing had happened. His wife confides in her and Richard’s friends about his increasingly odd behavior, but everyone brushes her worries aside. There is a swift sequence of scenes that shows Richard walking through what appears to be a cemetery, the unusual drawings he has illustrated, and finally one of him holding a hammer. The trailer ends with a new character — an unknown man — approaching the farm, yelling “I am here for him!”

Cast, Crew, and Production

Matt Smith and Morfydd Clark star as Richard and Juliet, a couple whose son Owen (Arthur Shaw) begins acting strange shortly after they move onto his father’s family’s land, home to a tree tied in mythic folklore. Erin Richards, Robert Emms, and Sean Gilder make up the rest of the main cast as Harrie, Steven, and Gordo. The screenplay for Starve Acre was written by the film’s director, Daniel Kokotajlo, who based the movie off Andrew Michael Hurley’s book by the same title. Cinematography was done by Adam Scarth, music by Matthew Herbert, and Brenna Rangott edited the film. The movie was produced by Tessa Ross, Juliette Howell, Emma Duffy, and Derrin Schlesinger, and production companies include BBC Film, BFI, House Productions, and Access Entertainment,

Filming and Release

It was announced in January 2022 that Daniel Kokotajlo would be directing the film based on his screenplay, which took inspiration from Andrew Michael Hurley’s book Starve Acre. It was also announced that Matt Smith and Morfydd Clark would be joining the cast.
