‘Superman’ Crew Member Commits Suicide on Atlanta Set

‘Superman: Legacy’

Fayetteville Police received a call on Wednesday reporting an unconscious contractor on the set of the new Superman movie. Upon arrival, police discovered that a crew member had committed suicide.

Superman (2025)

Superman (2025) — originally titled Superman: Legacy — is the first movie in the DCU chapter, Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. The movie’s writer and director James Gunn stated that the film would focus on a younger version of Clark Kent/Superman as he attempts to reconnect with his Kryptonian heritage with his adopted parents. Superman contains a large cast, most of which are stars of the film. Main character Clark Kent/Superman is played by David Corenswet. Other stars include Rachel Brosnahan, Isabela Merced, Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, Anthony Carrigan, Maria Gabríela de Faría, Sara Sapaio, Skyler Gisondo, Nicholas Hoult, Terence Rosemore, Wendell Pierce, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Neva Howell, Beck Bennett, Mikaela Hoover, and Christopher McDonald. The movie is produced by Peter Safran, and the production company is DC Studios.

Suicide On Set

On Wednesday, July 23, 2024, Fayetteville Police Department received and responded to a call reporting an unconscious contractor at Trilith Studios, the set for Superman (2025). When they arrived on scene, officers discovered the body of a crew member with an apparent self-inflicted injury, with no suspicion of foul play. The team member’s death was reported on Thursday, July 24, 2024, and it was confirmed that the deceased (an unnamed woman) was working on the set. The movie’s director, James Gunn, reportedly brought the crew together and halted production until further notice. IGN reached out to both DC Studios and Warner Bros for comment, but no public statements have been made yet.

Production

In December 2022, screenwriter, director, and producer James Gunn — who became CEO of DC Studios in October 2022 — announced that he was writing a new Superman film, which would focus on a younger version of Clark Kent/Superman as he tried to reconnect with his Kryptonian roots alongside Ma and Pa Kent. On January 31, 2023, Gunn and Safran announced their plans for DCU projects, containing two chapters with multiple movies in each chapter. The first chapter was revealed to be Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, and would start with Superman: Legacy (2025), later retitled Superman. The film was scheduled to be released on July 11, 2025. In March 2023, it was confirmed that James Gunn would be directing and Peter Safran would be producing the movie. Filming was supposed to begin in January 2024, but the SAG-AFTRA strike pushed it back until March 2024. Gunn had stated it would still be released in July 2025. After the suicide of a crew member on set during the final week of filming, James Gunn halted production.
