Soldier Boy is Back Once More!
At this year’s Comic-Con, Jensen Ackles made a huge announcement for The Boys. He will return as Soldier Boy in a ‘50s prequel titled Vought Rising alongside Aya Cash.
Vought Rising
According to IGN, another spinoff for The Boys has entered development. One of the many huge reveals from this year’s San Diego Comic-Con was the upcoming prequel series, Vought Rising. On stage, Ackles announced that scripts were already being written for the show, which would be set in the 1950s.
Of the series, Ackles said the script had “everything from Judy Garland to Paul McCartney,” highlighting its status as a period piece. A different era would be a great place to further flesh out the history of The Boys’ universe. Ackles is a longtime ally of showrunner Eric Kripke, as he starred in his previous Supernatural series as lead Dean Winchester.
Jensen Ackles’ Character
This news is especially exciting to many, given the hype surrounding Jensen Ackles’ character, Soldier Boy. Soldier Boy was intended as a dark parody of Captain America, showcasing the more questionable aspects of the nation’s tactics. While intended as a villain, he immediately became popular given his bombastic character, badass machismo, and Ackles’ performance. At the end of Season 4, Soldier Boy’s return was also teased.
Joining him is Aya Cash as Stormfront/Liberty/Klara Risinger. She was the arc villain of Season 2, and it was revealed that she was a century-old racist trying to manipulate Homelander. Given the audience’s knowledge of the character, there is little doubt she will play a more villainous role.
The Boys Cinematic Universe
One of the more well-received jokes from The Boys Season 4 was a decades-long roadmap of the upcoming films in the in-universe “Vought Cinematic Universe.” This was a clear jab at the huge and often rapidly changing schedules Marvel would create for their films. While funny, Prime Video is unironically doing this with the franchise.
Besides this series, Prime also announced season 2 of Gen V, a spinoff titled The Boys: Mexico, headed by Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal, and another spinoff. This is particularly ironic as The Boys was founded on making fun of these exact properties that relied on nostalgic cameos and constant spinoffs. Adding to the irony is that The Boys is owned by Amazon itself. Given the declining reception to the latest season, viewers can hope Ackles’ return will redeem its reputation.
